Ask the Geeky Girls -
Carolyn (ChinaKnitz) from China asks:
Hi, I’m an American living in China. My husband and I make a trip to the US every couple of years. We’ll be visiting this summer for the first time in three years. I’m currently working on my Master Hand Knitting certification and hope to take my tech editing certification later this year. I’m starting to do some designing as well. In China, circulars longer than 30” are unavailable as are sizes over size 9. Even in straight needles, they only go up to size 11 and those are difficult to locate. DPNs are 12” long. Oh, and circulars 16” and shorter don’t exist either. No hand dyed yarns and bulky yarns are rare. But, even though yarn is squishy, you can only fit so much in a suitcase. (Women’s clothes larger than size 12 are almost impossible to find and women’s shoes larger than a 7 don’t exist. Let’s just say, they don’t make clothes for my curves so I have to bring enough clothing to last, too. I’m down to about 4 pairs of undies this time, so I don’t want to skimp on clothes!)
Anyway, I’m looking into getting a yarn swift, ball winder, digital scale, yarn meter counter, as well as blocking supplies (I do have a set of Knit Blockers and some T-pins). I’m not even sure all of this would fit in a suitcase. My question is, Which of these tools would you consider absolute necessity and which aren’t that important? Since you’re used to traveling with your knitting, I thought you’d be a great person to ask. Thank you so much!
